Empowerment Stories

Overview

We want boys and young men to be able to access the support they need when they need it. Through the Thriving Not Just Surviving initiative funded by Comic Relief, we ran activities in the community to ensure the needs of boys and young men are by met by services like ours.

On this page you will find highlights from the activities we delivered over the course of the project:

  • Empowerment Stories - Interviews with people who have faced and overcome obstacles in their lives.
  • YouFitness sessions with Simply Kids personal development sessions with guest speakers attached to weekly Simply Kids' weekly football.
  • Trim 'N' Grin - a back to school engagement event for pupils, which takes place at barber shops in Croydon and Merton.
  • Poetic Power - poetry workshops delivered in collaboration with Well Versed Ink facilitators at Shrublands Community Centre
  • Rap Sessions with Rap Therapy - a 12 week workshop delivered at Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Youth Centre in May 2019.
  • Interviewing clients from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds to learn about their experiences of local services.
  • Mental Health Awareness - We have organised mental health awareness sessions alongside Croydon Social Prescribing for groups of local barbers to gain awareness in mental health and mental illness.

Here's a clip from our most recent session delivered by Juney Muhammad from South London and Maudsley
