Shining a Light on Young Carers
We believe every child and young person deserves the Brilliant, Beautiful, and Better mental health you need to thrive.
During Carers Week (9th to 15th June), we’re shining a light on young carers - the often-unseen heroes aged 5 to 25 who juggle school, friendships, and their own wellbeing while supporting someone in their family.
A young carers reality deserves recognition, respect, and action. This week, we’re raising awareness, challenging myths, and reminding young carers: you matter, and we see you.
Why Carers Week Matters
Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face, and recognise the vital contribution carers make to families and communities across the UK.
The theme for 2025 - Caring About Equality - puts a spotlight on the inequalities unpaid carers face every day. These inequalities can affect every part of a carer’s life, from education and employment to health and financial security.
The Hidden Struggles of Young Carers
In Croydon and across South West London, many young people care for a parent, sibling, or relative with a disability, illness, mental health condition, or substance misuse. These young carers often face:
📚 Missed school or college opportunities
😔 Mental health struggles
🧍 Isolation from peers
🚫 Lack of recognition or access to help
*Young adult carers are 38% less likely to achieve a university degree than their peers. That’s not because they lack talent or ambition - it’s because they’re carrying responsibilities that most people their age don’t have to think about.
Mental Health Support for Young Carers
At Off the Record, we provide free, confidential mental health support for young carers in Croydon and beyond. We offer:
What Needs to Change
