For many, summer break is a time to relax, travel, and catch up with friends. But for others, it can feel overwhelming, lonely, or even stressful. If you're not feeling the excitement that others seem to be sharing online, you're not alone - and that's okay.

Whether it's money worries, a lack of structure, or just feeling out of sync, here are some tips to help you take care of your mental health this summer:

1. Keep a Healthy Routine

Without school or university schedules, it’s easy to fall out of rhythm. Try to:

  • Get enough sleep – aim for a regular bedtime and wake-up time.
  • Eat balanced meals – fuel your body with food that makes you feel good.
  • Move your body – even a short walk or dancing in your room can boost your mood.

2. Reach Out for Support

If you're feeling anxious, low, or just not yourself, don’t keep it in.

  • Check out our Service Directory for local support options.
  • You can also access our Free Online Counselling or call us Monday to Friday between 3 to 6pm throughout the summer on 0800 980 7475 and speak to someone who understands what you’re going through.

3. Find Free or Low-Cost Things to Do

You don’t need loads of money to have a good summer. Look into:

  • Local community hubs – many offer free or subsidised workshops, art sessions, exhibitions or sports. Here are a few places to look at Turf Projects, Stanley Arts, Croydon BME Forum, Queer Croydon.
  • Libraries and youth centres – great places to meet people, see what’s happening locally on the library noticeboards and try something new in Croydon Libraries, Sutton Library, Merton Library.
  • Volunteering – a great way to build skills and feel connected. Check out Croydon Voluntary Action.

4. Take Social Media Breaks

It’s easy to compare your summer to someone else’s highlight reel. Remember:

  • People usually post the best bits, not the full picture.
  • Take breaks from scrolling if it’s making you feel down.
  • Focus on what makes you feel good, not what looks good online.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

Not every day will be perfect - and that’s okay. Celebrate the small wins, whether it’s getting out of bed, texting a friend, or trying something new.
